poem

 Headlights

Some like to gaze up at the stars

While others prefer the strobe-like flashings of summer fireflies

And then there are those who weary of goodbyes,

Stay up late and watch from bedroom windows

For the shimmer of headlights from familiar cars

That suddenly appear on the road

At the top of your neighborhood hill.

It’s hard to fall asleep

Without knowing for sure

There is still a reliable light

To burst forth from the pitch dark
